England Edge Nigeria on Penalties to Reach Quarterfinals

England advanced to the FIFA Women’s World Cup quarterfinals on Saturday, defeating Nigeria 4-2 on penalties after the match was tied 0-0 through extra time.
The match was decided by a dramatic penalty shootout, with England scoring all four of their penalties and Nigeria missing two.

Bethany, Rachel Daly, Alex Greenwood, and Chloe Kelly scored for England, while Christie Ucheibe and Rashidat Ajibade scored for Nigeria. Michelle Eloji and Desire Oparanoji had their penalties saved by England goalkeeper Mary Earps.
England had been reduced to 10 players in the 87th minute when Lauren James was sent off for a second yellow card, but they held on to secure the victory.
The win is a significant boost for England, considered one of the tournament’s favourites.
