Nepal Books T20 World Cup Spot with Thumping Victory Over UAE

Nepal secured their ticket to the ICC Twenty20 World Cup in the West Indies and America with a convincing eight-wicket victory over the UAE in the semi-final of the Asia Regional Final on Friday.

Chasing a modest target of 135, Nepal made light work of the task, reaching the target in just 17.1 overs. Aasif Sheikh played a pivotal role in the chase, remaining unbeaten with a 63 not out, including six fours and two sixes. He was ably supported by skipper Rohit Kumar Paudel, who also stayed unbeaten to score 35 runs off 21 balls, with three fours and one six.

Earlier, the UAE struggled to set a competitive total, losing nine wickets for 134 runs in their allotted 20 overs. Sompal Kami, Rohit Paudel, Sandeep Lamichhane, and Kushal Malla were among the wicket-takers for Nepal.

This marks Nepal’s second appearance in the T20 World Cup, their first in 2014. Their victory over the UAE is a testament to their growing strength in the shortest format of the game.

Nepal’s Path to the World Cup

Nepal’s path to the World Cup took work. They had to overcome a tough challenge from Oman in the group stage, but they eventually emerged victorious. They also had convincing wins over Singapore and Malaysia.

Coach Monty Desai made a strategic change for the semi-final, fielding Dipendra Singh Airee instead of Sandeep Jora.

UAE’s Journey Comes to an End

The UAE’s journey in the tournament ended with this defeat. They had a good run in the group stage, but they needed help to replicate that form in the semi-final.

Nepal to Face Oman in the Final

Nepal will now face Oman in the final, which promises to be another exciting contest. Oman defeated Bahrain in the other semi-final to book their place in the final.

The T20 World Cup will be held in the West Indies and America in 2024.
