Nepal Stumble Against Pakistan in U-19 Asia Cup Opener

In a compelling encounter at the ACC U-19 Asia Cup, Nepal succumbed to a challenging seven-wicket defeat against Pakistan in the inaugural match.

Sent to bat first at the ICC Academy’s second ground in the UAE on Friday, Nepal set a modest target of 153 runs. However, their bowling attack failed to contain Pakistan’s resolute chase, allowing them to reach the target in 26.2 overs, losing only three wickets.

Star Pakistani batsman Azan Avis emerged as the pivotal force, anchoring the chase with an impressive 56 runs in 62 balls, studded with eight boundaries. Captain Saad Baig also contributed significantly, scoring a solid 50 runs in 56 balls, including five fours. Mohammad Zishan and Shahzad Khan provided valuable support with scores of 20 and 15, respectively.

The dynamic duo of Avis and Baig forged a crucial 108-run partnership for the third wicket, laying the foundation for Pakistan’s victory. Gulshan Jha and Akash Tripathi claimed wickets for Nepal, but their efforts proved insufficient.

Nepal faced a tough battle earlier after losing the toss and being sent to bat. They were eventually bowled out for 152 runs in 47.2 overs. Uttam Thapa Magar stood tall for the young Nepali side, scoring a battling 51 runs in 74 balls, decorated with three fours and two sixes. Dipesh Kandel (31) and Arjun Kumal (21) also contributed with valuable runs, but a lack of support from other batsmen ultimately hindered their progress.

The sixth-wicket partnership of 68 runs between Uttam and Dipesh offered a glimmer of hope for Nepal. However, Pakistan’s bowling attack, spearheaded by Mohammad Zeeshan, proved too strong. Zeeshan delivered a remarkable spell, claiming 6 wickets in 9.2 overs, conceding only 19 runs and providing a maiden. Amir Hasan chipped in with two doors, while Ubaid Shah and Ali Asfand grabbed one each.

Nepal now faces a crucial encounter against Afghanistan on Sunday, seeking to bounce back and secure their first win in the tournament. The young team will need to regroup and strategize effectively to overcome a solid Afghan side and keep their hopes of a strong run in the U-19 Asia Cup alive.
