Army Storms Into Pokhara Semis, Crushing Sankata’s Title Defense Hopes

The 23rd Aaha Rara Pokhara Gold Cup witnessed a major upset as Tribhuvan Army Club steamrolled past defending champions Sankata Club, securing a dominant 3-0 victory and a place in the coveted semi-finals.
The game played amidst a raucous crowd at Pokhara Stadium on Sunday, was a masterclass in tactical brilliance and ruthless finishing from Army. Taking control early on, Army dictated the tempo, with midfield maestro Dinesh Henjan weaving his magic. His pinpoint passes and incisive runs unsettled Sankata’s defence, leading to the opening goal just before halftime.

With a predator’s instinct, Captain Bharat Khawas whipped in a delicious cross, and Gillespie Jung Karki headed home to put the Army ahead. The goal sent a wave of celebration through the Army ranks, while Sankata’s star-studded lineup looked stunned.
The second half was all Army. Building on their momentum, they earned a penalty early on, and Heinjan, with ice in his veins, stepped up to convert. The lead was now two, and Sankata found themselves chasing shadows.

Despite Sankata’s valiant efforts, the Army’s defence, marshalled by the ever-reliable Bimal Pandey, stood firm. Every Sankata attack was snuffed out, and their hopes of a comeback dwindled with each missed opportunity.
The final whistle blew, and the celebrations erupted for Army. They had secured their place in the next round and sent a powerful message to the rest of the tournament contenders.
“This is a huge result for us,” said a jubilant Dinesh Henjan after the game. “We knew Sankata would be a tough opponent, but we believed in ourselves and stuck to our plan. Now, we set our sights on the trophy.”
With Sankata’s title defence in tatters, the remaining quarter-finals promise even more drama and excitement. Nepal Police Club lock horns with the Church Boys Club, while Jawalakhel Youth Club faces the mighty Manang Marshyangdi Club. The stage is set for another weekend of footballing fireworks in the heart of Pokhara.
