Jeddah, Saudi Arabia: Demonstrating remarkable resilience, Nepal’s valiant run at the West Asian Football Federation (WAFF) Women’s Championship came to a heartbreaking end as they fell 5-3 to Jordan in a penalty shootout after a thrilling 2-2 draw in the final.
This defeat marks the 11th time Nepal has finished runner-up in an international competition, their dream of capturing their first major title slipping just out of reach.
The high-octane encounter at the Prince Abdullah Al Faisal Stadium was thrilling, with both teams trading blows throughout regulation time. Sabita Rana Magar put Nepal ahead early in the second half, but Jordan clawed their way back through Lina Phares and a late strike from Sarah Abu Saba.
With the clock ticking down, Geeta Rana coolly converted a penalty in injury time, forcing the match into a nerve-wracking penalty shootout.
Nepal’s Geeta Rana, Deepa Shahi, and Hirakumari Bhujel all found the net from the spot, but Amrita Jaisi’s attempt was saved by the impressive Jordanian goalkeeper, Sharin Al Salabe.
Meanwhile, Jordan displayed remarkable composure, with Ayah Al Majali, Meisa Jabrah, Noor Joquas, Sarah Abu Saba, and Rozbahan Fariz converting their penalties to secure their sixth WAFF Women’s Championship title.
Despite the final result, Nepal can hold its head high, proud of its remarkable journey to the last. Their victories over Lebanon in the semifinals and impressive performance throughout the tournament showcased the continued growth and potential of the women’s national team.
This was also a historic tournament for Nepal, marking its first-ever participation in the WAFF Women’s Championship, while Jordan solidified its dominance in the region by claiming its sixth title.
