Kolkata Buzzes as Mohun Bagan Mariners Secure Historic ISL Shield Title!

KATHMANDU, Nepal (April 16):  Jubilation erupted in Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium on Monday night, but the echoes indeed reached Kolkata as Mohun Bagan Super Giant etched their name in history, claiming their maiden Indian Super League (ISL) Shield title!

In a nail-biting encounter that intensified their age-old rivalry with Mumbai City FC, the Mariners emerged victorious with a hard-fought 2-1 win. This crucial victory not only secured the coveted Shield but also solidified their position at the top of the league table, marking a significant milestone in their football history.

The Kolkata giants dominantly finished the league stage, amassing 48 points from 22 matches. Their relentless attack and resolute defence saw them win 15 games, draw three, and lose just four. Mumbai City FC, their closest competitor, fell just a point short with 47 points, showcasing the competitive nature of the league.

The final match was nerve-wracking, with both teams vying for the top spot. Liston Colaco, the Mariners’ attacking talisman, broke the deadlock in the 28th minute, sending the home crowd into a frenzy. Jason Cummings further extended their lead in the 80th minute, putting them in a commanding position.

However, Mumbai City FC refused to go down without a fight. Lallianzuala Chhangte pulled one back in the match’s dying moments (89th minute), raising hopes for a dramatic turnaround. The tension escalated further when Mohun Bagan was reduced to 10 men after a red card in the 91st minute.

But the resilient Mariners held their nerve, showcasing incredible defensive grit to secure a historic 2-1 victory. This title win, a testament to the unwavering support of their passionate fanbase, marks a significant achievement for the club and their fans, fondly known as the ‘Kolkata Mariners.’

In other exciting news, Mohammedan Sporting Club, the champions of the I-League, secured a well-deserved promotion to the ISL for the first time in their history. Their impressive performance throughout the season, culminating in 52 points from 24 matches, is a testament to their dedication and skill.

On the other hand, Hyderabad FC faced relegation after accumulating only eight points from 22 games. This serves as a stark reminder of the fierce competition within the ISL. Congratulations to the promoted and the champions, and commiserations to the relegated.
