Copa América Heats Up: Colombia, Brazil Book Quarterfinal Spots
Copa America group action dramatically ended Wednesday evening at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, as Colombia and Brazil booked their places in the quarterfinals after a 1-1 draw.
The result left Colombia with a perfect record in Group D. Colombia grabbed seven points from three games, and the Cafeteros were followed by runners-up Brazil with five points despite their late equalizing.
Brazil took the early advantage through a strike from Raphinha in the 12th minute. But Colombia, displaying remarkable resilience, would not be dented. A dogged display of defence kept them within a chance, and that chance came in style. Deep into first-half stoppages, Daniel Muñoz found an equalizer for the Cafeteros to send the Colombian faithful into raptures.
The latter half yielded no further goals, with both sides content to play out a draw. This outcome, therefore, sets up some highly anticipated and compelling quarterfinal contests. Colombia faces a resurgent Panama, and Brazil faces the familiar test of Uruguay.
In tonight’s other Group D game, Costa Rica managed this 2-1 win – to confirm their exit from the competition against Paraguay.
