Miami, FL – Argentina wrote another chapter in Copa America history as they clinched a record 16th Copa America trophy, beating Colombia 1-0 in an extra-time at the Hard Rock Stadium on Monday.
Lautaro Martinez was the match’s hero. In the 112th minute, he scored a decisive goal from Giovanni Lo Celso’s pass to become the leader of the overall winners in the competition’s history. The triumph broke Uruguay’s previous record of 15 championships.
The match was closely contested, and neither side could score during the regular ninety minutes. Argentina had their best chance of taking the lead in the 76th minute when Nicolas Gonzalez’s shot was disallowed for a marginal offside.
The extra thirty minutes made the difference as Martinez calmly put the ball in the back of the net for Argentina. This is the third straight victory for Lionel Scaloni’s team, following the 2021 Copa America and the 2022 FIFA World Cup title.
