A nail-biter in Kirtipur: Nepal edge past Canada in ODI opener

Kirtipur, Nepal: Nepal edged past Canada by a slender margin of seven runs in the first ODI of the three-match series at TU Cricket Ground on Thursday. Captain Rohit Kumar Paudel led the charge for the home team, claiming a match-winning 4/39.

Solid foundation, resolute chase: Batting first after winning the toss, Nepal posted a competitive 224 on-the-board contributions from Kushal Bhurtel (62) and Arif Seikh (32). Despite losing early wickets, they built a crucial platform in the face of a spirited Canadian chase.

Nicholas Kirtan (68) and Pargat Singh (58) played the visitors’ aggressor role, stitching together a crucial third-wicket stand of 79 runs. Aaron Johnson and Navneet chipped in with valuable cameos, but Nepal’s bowlers kept chipping away at the wickets, never allowing Canada to cruise.

Paudel’s double delight: Paudel proved his all-round worth, contributing with the bat and leading the bowling attack with his spin. His four wickets included the vital scalps of Kirtan and Pargat, derailing Canada’s chase at crucial junctures. Support from Lalit Rajbanshi (2/25) and others ensured Nepal held their nerve till the very end.

Debutant dazzles: Youngster Rijan made a dream debut for Nepal, grabbing a wicket in his first international over. This early breakthrough set the tone for a disciplined bowling performance from the hosts.

Intriguing series ahead: With a 1-0 lead, Nepal has gained the upper hand. However, Canada’s spirited fightback suggests they can’t be taken lightly. The second ODI on Saturday promises another enthralling contest between two teams hungry for victory.
