Italy Eliminated by Switzerland; Germany Triumphs Over Denmark

Berlin, Germany—In a stunning turn of events, Italy’s Euro 2024 campaign was abruptly halted with a 2-0 defeat to Switzerland in Saturday evening’s match at the Berlin Olympic Stadium. This unexpected outcome propelled Switzerland into the quarterfinals, shattering Italy’s hopes of retaining their continental crown.

Remo Freuler struck first for the Swiss, breaking the deadlock in the 37th minute to give his side a precious lead. In the second half, Switzerland would double its lead—through Ruben Vargas—to finally squash all hopes of an Italian comeback.

Meanwhile, in Dortmund, using VAR played a crucial role in the host nation’s 2-0 victory over Denmark. Kai Havertz opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 53rd minute after a handball by Joachim Andersen that was confirmed as a foul by the VAR. Then, in the 68th minute, Jamal Musiala sealed Germany’s progress with a goal, finishing a nice pass by Nico Schlotterbeck.

Despite what looked like an offside in Thomas Delaney’s goal, Denmark could not break through the German defence, maximally 50 minutes into the game. The win sees Germany march confidently into the next stage of the tournament.
