Shikhar Dhawan Joins Karnali Yaks for Nepal Premier League Debut

Shikhar Dhawan, the celebrated Indian cricketer, has joined the Karnali Yaks as their fourth overseas player for the upcoming Nepal Premier League (NPL), significantly boosting Nepali cricket. The 38-year-old batsman, renowned for his skill and consistency in international cricket, brings extensive experience and a star presence to the NPL, marking a landmark moment for the league.

Dhawan officially signed with the Yaks on Thursday, with team owner Jhanak Dutt Khanal, co-owner Ghirendra Ghimire, and Dr Surendra Thapa, Acting Indian Ambassador to Nepal, in attendance. This collaboration is expected to elevate both the NPL’s visibility and the cricket profile in Nepal. While contract details remain confidential, Dhawan’s involvement is anticipated to draw substantial attention to the league.

Dhawan’s record is exemplary: he has amassed 1,759 runs in 68 T20 internationals for India, including 11 half-centuries. In the IPL, he has excelled with teams like the Delhi Capitals, Mumbai Indians, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Punjab Kings.

Owner Jhanak Dutt Khanal praised the signing as a pivotal achievement for Nepali cricket, noting that Dhawan’s presence would benefit both the Yaks and Nepal’s cricket community. Dr Surendra Thapa highlighted the signing as a positive step for Nepal’s sports and tourism sectors. At the same time, co-owner Ghirendra Ghimire acknowledged the financial challenges of securing such a high-profile player but reaffirmed the commitment to enhancing the league.

Dhawan expressed his enthusiasm about joining the Yaks, stating, “I’m thrilled to join Karnali Yaks for the upcoming league. I look forward to playing in Nepal and contributing to a successful season.”

With Dhawan’s addition, Karnali Yaks has strengthened a lineup that already includes international players Chadwick Walton, Hussain Talat, Babar, Nepali all-rounder Sompal Kami and head coach Gyanendra Malla.

The NPL, overseen by the Nepal Cricket Association (CAN), will run from November 30 to December 22. It will feature eight teams, including Sudurpaschim Royals, Pokhara Avengers, Janakpur Bolts, Kathmandu Gurkhaz, Chitwan Rhinos, Biratnagar Kings, and Lumbini Lions, setting the stage for an exciting cricket season in Nepal.
