Australia Defeats Denmark 2-0 to Reach FIFA Women’s World Cup Quarterfinals

Australia advanced to the FIFA Women’s World Cup quarterfinals on Monday, defeating Denmark 2-0 at the Sydney Football Stadium.
Caitlin Ford and Haley Raso scored the goals for Australia.
Ford scored in the 29th minute, heading home a cross from Mary Fowler. Raso doubled the lead in the 70th minute, finishing off a pass from Emily Van Egmond.
Australia goalkeeper Lydia Williams made several saves to keep Denmark goalless, including a one-on-one stop against Nadia Nadim in the second half.

The win set up a quarterfinal clash against England, which defeated Nigeria 4-2 on penalties after the match was tied 2-2 after extra time.
Australia forward Sam Kerr made her return from injury in the 80th minute, coming on as a substitute for Hayley Raso. Kerr had missed Australia’s first three group-stage matches with a knee injury.
The win is a significant boost for Australia, one step closer to winning its first World Cup title.
