England Edge Colombia in Thriller to Reach Women’s World Cup Semi-Finals
England secured their place in the semi-finals of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup with a thrilling 2-1 victory over Colombia in Sydney on Saturday.
The Lionesses overturned a one-goal deficit to win the match, with goals from Lorraine Hemp and Alessia Russo. Lacy Santos scored the only goal for Colombia.
The match was a tightly contested affair, with both teams creating chances. Colombia took the lead in the 44th minute through Santos, but Hemp equalized for England in injury time at the end of the first half.
Russo then scored the winner for England in the 63rd minute, firing home a low shot from the edge of the penalty area.
The victory is England’s third consecutive semi-final appearance at the Women’s World Cup, and they will now face hosts Australia in the last four.
Australia reached the semi-finals after defeating France in a penalty shootout on Friday. Spain and Sweden will contest the other semi-final.
