Manchester City Wins UEFA Super Cup in Penalty Shootout
Manchester City won the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday, defeating Sevilla 5-4 in a penalty shootout after the match was tied 1-1 after extra time.
The English club won a record treble last season, claiming the Champions League, Premier League, and FA Cup. The previous month, they were denied the Community Shield title when they lost to Arsenal in a penalty shootout.
In the final in Greece, City were crowned champions when Sevilla’s Nemanja Gudelj hit the last penalty against the bar.
The match was evenly contested throughout, with Sevilla taking the lead in the 25th minute through Youssef En-Nesyri. City equalized in the 63rd minute through Cole Palmer, named man of the match.
The penalty shootout was also closely contested, with both teams scoring their first four penalties. However, Gudelj’s miss gave City the win and their first UEFA Super Cup title.
This is a significant boost for City ahead of the start of the new season, and they will be looking to defend their Premier League title and challenge for the Champions League again this year.
